Barrier islands were formed from sand and sediments, some extending for 100 miles or more, and are said to have begun forming when the glaciers receded and melted about 18,000 years ago when the last Ice Age ended. The islands parallel coastlines throughout the world and are prevalent along North America’s eastern coast.

As “paradise” locations, these islands present an outstanding vacation destination or an excellent place to own a high-rise condominium or an elegant waterfront home.

Imagine being able to swim in warm waters in the mild climate, walk along glorious white sand beaches searching for seashells, taking a boat out to sail or go deep sea fishing, participating in other water sports, and much more. Longboat Key

Its awesome Coquina Beach has clear water, clean soft white sand, and dolphins swimming by the shoreline. Longboat Key is also home to some of Florida’s finest golf and tennis facilities in Sarasota, Florida.

Lido Key

John Ringling, of Ringling’s Circus, purchased a group of islands off Sarasota in the 1920s but did not live to realize his dream of the chic dining and shopping district, St. Armand’s Circle with distinctive architecture, fine hotels, exclusive designer boutiques, and gourmet restaurants. Lido Key offers a wonderful variety of homes and condos.

Siesta Key

Siesta Key presents an “old Florida” feeling. Its popular white powder sand beaches are ranked among the best in the United States. The Point of Rocks has amazing formations where your hand can feel the flow of a fairly large "spring" in front of a small cave. You can also snorkel among the marine life.

Casey Key

This elegant “old Florida” island has mostly luxurious single-family homes with fewer than 400 residents and with some homes having a front yard bordering the Gulf and a backyard bordering the Intracoastal Waterway. There are no chain hotels and no high-rise condos. Casey Key was designated as an unspoiled marine, wildlife and bird sanctuary in 1970.

Bird Key

This 12-acre island contains exclusive estates, a population of less than 1,000 residents, and has a private yacht club.

Having purchased the island in 1906, in 1911 Thomas Martin Worcester began to build the first expensive home on any Sarasota Bay island. This “palace” was named New Edzell Castle after the Scottish ancestral home of his wife, who unfortunately died before its completion. Opened on February 17, 1914, it was a marvel with gas and electric lights, steam heat, and hot and cold water.

In the early 1920s, John Ringling purchased Bird Key and all the keys between the bay and the gulf in front of Sarasota. Arvida Realty, Inc., who purchased the Ringling holdings over 50 years ago, has made Bird Key and Longboat Key luxury places to live.
