There's NOT "Nothing to Do!"
What I hate to hear more than anything, especially from the under 40s in the area, is that there is “nothing to do in Sarasota.” Wrong! Aside from all the beaches, restaurants, and museums, there is a thriving social undercurrent in Sarasota, with more than enough clubs and activities to satisfy anyone who is willing to look. New in town? There’s a club just for you! Love to exercise or read or play a certain game? There’s a club for you too! Below are a few that I’ve sussed out recently, but I strongly suggest that you get on meetup.com, check Facebook events, and seek out social interactions in our area, because there really is a lot to do. You’d be amazed at what you can find just by a simple “Bridge Club Sarasota” Google search!
Book Lovers Club – The Sarasota Book Lovers Club meets once a month, on the second Saturday, at various restaurants, libraries, and bookstores around Sarasota. They read one book a month and discuss it at each meeting. It’s open to everyone, just check out www.meetup.com/The-Sarasota-Book-Lovers-Meetup-Group/ if you want more information.
The In-Between Bridge Club – One of the largest bridge clubs in the area, The In-Between Bridge Club provides duplicate games six days a week, and also hosts lessons and workshops, for every skill level from novice to expert. Since bridge is so far out of my realm of knowledge, I’m going to direct you right to the source: inbetweenbridge.com/. They encourage reservations, especially during The Season.
Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club - Although this club originates in North Port, they ride everywhere from Myakka to Nokomis and all over both Charlotte and Sarasota Counties. The Coastal Cruisers Bicycle Club has been in existence for over 35 years. They do weekly rides on Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as special occasion rides, such as 30 milers around Venice, long jaunts around Myakka Park, and a Century Ride. Their website is thorough and comprehensive, so for more information, check it out: www.coastalcruisers.net/
Kiwanis Club - Of course we have a local extension of the national Kiwanis Club, for those of you looking for a service club. Around here, they are known for their monthly Pancake Breakfasts and other fundraising events where they raise around $25,000 annually for local charities and give away about $10,000 in scholarships to deserving local students. Looking for a good way to serve your local community? Check out Kiwanis: southsarasotakiwanisclub.memberlodge.org/
Sarasota Newcomers Club - The Sarasota Newcomers Club was organized in 1986 as a social and civic organization developed to welcome newcomers to the Sarasota area and become your bridge to new friendships. With over 350 members, it's easy to see how they help you facilitate your goal of forging new friendships in a new community; they offer special interest groups in everything from kayaking to dining out, and also participate in community outreach. Come get in touch with your new community! www.sarasotanewcomers.org/
Manasota Track Club - The Manasota Track club was established 35 years ago, and serves Sarasota and Manatee County runners. From hardcore athletes to "fun runners", the MTC has members at all stages. Their goal is to support running and to forge comradery among the runners in Sarasota, by sponsoring events and runs where we can all get together and do what we love. As a runner and a Bill's Beer Run participant, I think it's about time I join this one!
Sarasota Young Professionals Group - The Sarasota YPG is a group for professionals from age 21-40, whose goal is to enrich the community while developing the young professionals in our area by networking and community opportunities. The YPG hold events ranging from professional workshops, to community outreach, to youth development, to mixers. If you are a young professional in the Sarasota area, come out to one of the mixers and get networking with your peers! www.sarasotaypg.com
