History of Palmer Ranch

The history of the Palmer Ranch and Sarasota, Florida go hand in hand as the development of the two into modern communities were completed with the assistance of the Palmer family. Bertha Palmer had come to national fame as the much younger wife of Chicago businessman Potter Palmer and inherited his $8 million fortune upon Potter's death in 1902. Bertha did not make her way to Sarasota until the winter of 1910 when she was attracted to the area by a newspaper column describing the palm trees and warm sea breezes of the area. 

Once Bertha arrived in the region she became a frequent visitor and purchased between 80,000 and 90,000 acres of land, which would become the Palmer Ranch of today. Known as an enterprising and formidable businesswoman in her own right, Bertha and her sons, Potter Jr. and Honore quickly set about creating a huge ranch using the latest methods in modern agriculture. The Palmer Ranch was the first to dip cattle to protect them from ticks and associated disease as the ornate guardians around the original house called The Oaks were some of the finest of the day. The Palmer's were so attached and drawn to their gardens that Bertha refused to alter the bungalow known as The Oaks until the gardens were complete.

The development of the site continued under the guidance of Bertha Honore Palmer until her death in 1918 when the land passed to Potter Jr. and Honore. The agricultural concerns of the Palmer Ranch were further developed under the guidance of her sons with the planting of the Hyde park Citrus Grove begun in 1922. The first steps to the area becoming its own community were taken with the introduction and establishment of an electricity power station at the Palmer Ranch along with the formation of an irrigation and water treatment center that made the ranch largely self sufficient.

Sarasota County was once owned largely by the Palmer family who established The Palmer Bank in the county, which managed to survive the Great Depression and was later merged with Southeast Bank after decades of successful operation. Much of the original ranch remains as part of the Historic Spanish Point garden site, but the original bungalow, The Oaks is no longer in existence. The Palmer Ranch now lends its name to a subdivision in Osprey and the majority of the ranch has now been given over to housing and shopping interests. Almost one third of the county was once owned by the Palmer family, which means many homes, stores and commercial buildings are located on land once part of the impressive Palmer Ranch.
